EDS Driver Job Description
Background: The EDS Driver is generally the first EDS
person on
the scene, and is typically the EDS person in charge for typical
incidents. This description is written for typical EDS
calls, which last only a few hours and involve two to four EDS
people.
Load the truck: Given the reported number to be fed, check the
truck
stock, and load the truck with sufficient food for the reported
number. We generally add 25 to 50 percent to the
reported
number as a safety factor. Add sufficient ice to the truck
(100
pounds in spring and fall, 200 pounds for a hot day.) Put
hot
water in coffee pot and light coffee pot.
Drive the truck to the scene.
Contact the served agency (police, fire, etc.) to determine where
to
set up.
Set up to serve and cook food: Level the truck if necessary,
set
out tables with snacks and condiments, and open the serving side
of the
truck.
Cook food: The driver is often the cook as well, but in many
cases
there will be other EDS personnel who will cook.
Direct EDS personnel: Lead the team of EDS people to do what needs
to
be done.
Serve food: This could be handing food to people upon
request, or
filling the serving warmer.
Plan departure: In consultation with the served agency and
EDS
leadership, plan to depart the scene at an appropriate time.
Clean truck: Clean grille and kitchen, with help of other
EDS
personnel.
Pack up and drive back to the garage.
Put away unused perishable food.
Restock truck with snacks, water, and Gatorade.
Report meal counts and any equipment issues to EDS leader.
